  • Born in Milan in 1688

  • Served as painter in Qing court for 50 years

  • Successfully combined Western realism with traditional Chinese conventions of brushwork

  • Also designed the Western Mansions in Old Summer Palace

  • Qianlong Emperor declared Castiglione as his Principal Court Painter in 1735

  • Created a unique style of painting that blended Chinese and western techniques

  • Qing court paintings began to show clear western influence due to Castiglione’s works

  • Qing court paintings began to incorporate western techniques of light, shade, and perspective

  • In 2000, his “Fields in the Autumn” was auctioned off for HK$17.6 million
