Vicomte Lepic Ludovic Napoléon (1839-1889)

  • Initially associated with the impressionists, but distanced himself after the group insisted that their works should not be exhibited at the official Salon

  • Had a strong friendship with Impressionist painter Edgar Degas and appeared in several of Degas’ works

  • Lepic’s painting, “The Smashed Boat”, was awarded a medal at the 1877 Salon and became known as a marine artist

  • In 1883, Lepic was appointed Peintre de la Marine by the French state
